Check your plastic products are UV stabilised!!
We had heard through the grapevine that there are one or two newer manufacturers who may be trying to slip electrical plinths into the market that are made out of non UV-stabilised plastic!! Manufacturing with UV stabilised powder is more expensive but doing without UV treatment is simply not an option if you want product to last outdoors in NZ conditions. Polyethylene is a fantastically durable and robust material that will keep its good looks and elasticity for decades - if it is UV treated. If it is not then after just one or two years it will start to discolour - but more importantly it will go brittle and is easily damaged. On impact it may shatter or split. We had some tests done on plastic that was made from powder that wasn't UV treated, and some from the powder that we use. Both pieces of plastic were artficially aged by being placed in a UV light box. Then a 9kg weight was dropped on them from a height of 1.4m. The non UV treated powder split like a watermelon.
The photo tells the story. No prizes for guessing which piece of plastic was made from what powder! All Gyro electrical products are made from virgin high quality UV treated polyethylene powder. We don't use non-uv treated and we don't use reground plastic. |
